Michigan, the Wolverine State, is located in the north midwestern region of the US. It is bordered by 4 of the 5 Great Lakes and has the longest freshwater coastline of any state. The state's name is adapted from the Anishinaabe language word for "large lake", mishigami. Michigan consists of two peninsulas separated by the Straits of Mackinac that link Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. The state is bordered to the north by Lake Superior (and beyond that, the Canadian province of Ontario), to the east by Lake Huron and Ontario, to the south by the states of Ohio and Indiana, and to the west by Lake Michigan and Wisconsin. Most of the state's population live in the Lower Peninsula; the Upper Peninsula is heavily forested and sparsely populated.
Michigan has a diverse economy that includes manufacturing (especially automobiles), pharmaceuticals, agriculture, mining, engineering, and information technology. Tourism is important to the state, especially for the Upper Peninsula. Michigan is represented in four professional sports leagues, all of which are based in Detroit: the Detroit Tigers (MLB, AL), the Detroit Lions (NFL), the Detroit Red Wings (NHL), and the Detroit Pistons (NBA).
